Defendant

In some states, this term means the same as ‘accused‘ in the criminal jurisdiction. In some states, it is the term used for people charged with a criminal offence who come to the Local/Magistrates Court to defend themselves. If they are found guilty during the committal proceedings, then they become the accused. ‘Defendant’ is also used in the civil jurisdiction for the party that is being sued.
